Norway Spruce

Size: The Norway Spruce is a fast-growing evergreen conifer that grows to 40' to 60' tall and 25' to 30' wide.

Description: The branches line the trunk to the ground. The new needles have white lines on each side and mature from light green to dark, glossy green. The cones are up to 4 inches long and pendulous, maturing from purple or green to light brown. It is commonly used as a windbreak or screen. Water is requred during dry periods, and to make the tree more dense, prune in the spring, removing half of each candle.

Colorado Spruce

Size: The Colorado Spruce grows to 30 to 60 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide in the landscape.

Description: The Colorado Spruce is a popular evergreen conifer. It is dense and pyramidal, with stiff needles. The needles have a bluish or silver cast that is quite variable between specimens. It is hard to incorporate into a landscape and is best suited to the back of a large lot. To make more dense, prune in spring, removing half of each candle.

Austrian Spruce

Size: This is a fast graowing tree that should reach 5' in 6-7 years, starting with a 2-yr. seedling

Description: The Austrian Spruce, is a densely branched tree producing long dark needles. This tree is a vigorous tree that thrives well in cities. Very hardy and does well in a variety of soil types. The spreading branches of a young tree form a pyramidal outline, but in old age, it sometimes achieves a picturesque flat-topped head. It can be sheared to make attractive Christmas trees. The tree requires full sun and ordinary to poor soil. It also does equally well in limestone or acidic soil and it can take dry, rocky, windy conditions. It is also good for thick screen or windbreak. For screen, space 6 feet apart.

White Spruce

Size: The White Spruce ranges in size from 30' to 50'. This tree also has a medium growth rate.

Description: The White Spruce forms a tall, narrow spire with ascending branches. The short, green, waxy, curved needles are four-sided and smell bad when crushed. The brown bark flakes to reveal a silvery layer. The 2-inch cones mature from green to light brown. it tolerates crowding, wind, drought, and extreme temperatures. To make more dense, prune in spring, removing half of each candle.
